AWMT #5: Taking Control - New Features in Memex
TL;DR - We're introducing new features that give you more control over your development workflow. Next up: efficiency. Read on for more details!
The journey to empower AI-native builders continues.
As builders integrate AI into their workflows, two clear needs have emerged: the ability to maintain precise control over AI-assisted development, and the need to make these workflows more efficient and cost-effective.
We've spent the last few weeks working closely with our user community, understanding their experiences and challenges with AI-assisted development. A consistent theme emerged: while AI can significantly accelerate development, users need to trust and control the process to fully embrace it.
This feedback resonates with broader industry trends. As AI tools become more capable and LLMs inference becomes more powerful and cheaper (hello DeepSeek!), the focus shifts from what they can do to how they can be reliably integrated into professional workflows. Builders don't just want powerful tools—they want tools they can trust and control, especially when those tools are executing code or making development decisions.
Today, we're introducing features that put more control in your hands, marking an important step toward our vision of empowering AI-native builders.
Taking Control of Your AI Development Workflow
As AI-assisted development becomes more prevalent, the need for precise control over automated processes grows. Our latest release introduces two powerful features that put you firmly in control.
Code Execution Approval
Security and precision are paramount in development. With Code Execution Approval, you can now review and approve each code block before execution. This feature ensures that:
Every piece of code aligns with your intentions
You can intervene and adjust the approach when needed
Your development environment remains secure and controlled

Turns Control
Development is a dialogue between you and your Memex. Our new Turns Control feature lets you set the maximum number of autonomous steps Memex can take before pausing for your input. This means:
More granular control over your workflow
Better alignment with your development style
Clearer oversight of the development process

Both features are easily accessible through the settings panel under Custom Instructions, allowing you to tailor Memex to your preferred working style.
Next up: Memex’s Efficiency Era
With these control features in place, our next major focus is on usage efficiency. As AI tools become central to development workflows, the cost and resource utilization of these tools becomes increasingly important.
We're working on significant improvements to make Memex more efficient, ensuring you get more value from every interaction. These upcoming efficiency improvements, combined with the new control features, will significantly optimize resource utilization during complex development tasks. The ability to guide Memex's workflow more precisely prevents unnecessary exploration paths and ensures credits are spent on productive development directions.
We have ambitious goals on this front. Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks.
Additional Improvements
This release also includes several quality-of-life improvements:
Enhanced file editing reliability
Improved Windows shell execution
Windows binaries are now signed
Bug fix for Mac users where Memex wouldn't reopen if you last quit it via CMND + Q. (Let us know if you hit this bug and can walk you through how to fix it.)
Various UI and UX refinements
